peace: QUOTES ON PEACE FROM NOTABLE, INFLUENTIAL AS WELL AS COMMON PEOPLE
QUOTES ON PEACE
Now that the wars are coming to an end, I wish you to prosper in PEACE. May all mortals from now on live like one people in concord and for mutual advancement. Consider the world as your country, with laws common to all and where the best will govern irrespective of tribe. I do not distinguish among men, as the narrow-minded do, both among Greeks and Barbarians. I am not interested in the descendance of the citizens or their racial origins. I classify them using one criterion: their virtue. For me every virtuous foreigner is a Greek and every evil Greek worse than a Barbarian. If differences ever develop between you never have recourse to arms, but solve them PEACEFULLY. If necessary, I should be your arbitrator.
James E. Faust: I wish to speak of a hope that children will know a future filled with some happiness and peace.
Though force can protect in emergency, only justice, fairness, consideration and cooperation can finally lead men to the dawn of eternal peace
Dwight D. Eisenhower
MAIREAD MAGUIRE
John F. Kennedy
Peace does not rest in the charters and covenants alone. It lies in the hearts and minds of all people. So let us not rest all our hopes on parchment and on paper, let us strive to build peace, a desire for peace, a willingness to work for peace in the hearts and minds of all of our people. I believe that we can. I believe the problems of human destiny are not beyond the reach of human beings.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.
Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation.”
The foundation of such a method is love.
Perhaps in His wisdom the Almighty is trying to show us that a leader may chart the way, may point out the road to lasting peace, but that many leaders and many peoples must do the building. Eleanor Roosevelt
Catherine of Siena
This place is peace and would be silent peace were it not for an Eisteddfod of small birds outvying each other with an eagerness which cannot wait until the last candidate has finished. They have not wanted peace at all; they have wanted to be spared war -- as though the absence of war was the same as peace.
It is within the families themselves where peace can begin. If families can learn to respect their members, and deal with conflict resolution, that would be the first step to keeping peace on a global level.
Alice Christiana Meynell
The peace crusade is going to take a long time. I will devote the rest of my life to world peace, but that will not be long enough. I will encourage others to carry on the work when I am done.
Malala Yousafzai
“If you want to end the war then instead of sending guns, send books. Instead of sending tanks, send pens. Instead of sending soldiers, send teachers.”
Elder Marvin J. Ashton:
Never will peace and hatred be able to abide in the same soul. ..
…only those at peace can properly cope with accusations and
slander.
True peace must not be dependent upon conditions or happenings. Peace must stem from an inward contentment built upon trust, faith, and goodwill toward God, fellowmen, and self. It must be constantly nurtured by the individual who is soundly anchored to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Only then can a person realize that the trials and tribulations of daily life are less important than God’s total goodness.
Lasting peace is an eternal personal quest. Peace does come from obedience to the law. Peace comes to those who develop character and trust.
Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.
Mother Teressa
17 Now this Melchizedek was a king over the land
of Salem; and his people had waxed strong in iniquity and abomination; yea,
they had all gone astray; they were full of all manner of wickedness;
18 But Melchizedek having exercised mighty faith, and received the office of the high priesthood according to the holy order of God, did preach repentance unto his people. And behold, they did repent; and Melchizedek did establish peace in the land in his days...
Charles Sumner
Give me the money that has been spent in war and I will clothe every man, woman and child in an attire in which kings and queens will be proud. I will build a schoolhouse in every valley over the whole earth. I will crown every hillside with a place of worship consecrated to peace.
- "If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed — but hate these things in yourself, not in another."
Mahatma Gandhi
War will stop when we no longer praise it, or give it any attention at all. Peace will come wherever it is sincerely invited."
Alice Walker
Thomas S. Monson: World peace, though a lofty goal, is but an outgrowth of the personal peace each individual seeks to attain. I speak not of the peace promoted by man, but peace as promised of God. I speak of peace in our homes, peace in our hearts, even peace in our lives. Peace after the way of man is perishable. Peace after the manner of God will prevail.
Happiness, true happiness, is an inner quality. It is a state of mind. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you have nothing else, you can be happy. If you have everything the world can give - pleasure, possessions, power - but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy. Dada Vaswani
Albert Einstein Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.
M. Russell Ballard: In turbulent and sometimes frightening times, the Savior’s promise of infinite and eternal peace resonates with special power to us, just as His ability to calm the crashing waves must have profoundly affected those who were with Him on the Sea of Galilee that stormy night so long ago.
DARIUS, KING OF BABYLON
Daniel 5: 25, 26
25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people,
nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto
you.
26 I make a decree, That in every dominion
of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living
God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which
shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto
the end.
Joseph B. Wirthlin: The value of peace within our hearts cannot be measured. When we are at peace, we can be free of worry and fear, knowing that with the Lord’s help, we can do all that is expected or required of us.
…we are to follow the laws of men (render unto Caesar) to live peacefully under civil authority, and we follow the laws of God toward our eternal destination...
…we obey the current law and use peaceful means to change it...
Rick Warren and Matthew 11:28
Where do you go for peace if you don't have God in your life, if you're not connected on a moment-by-moment basis? Jesus Christ has an incredible offer for you. He says, "If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest."
worth aiming for in all circumstances. Estella Eliot
A breath of prayer in our sorrows means
comfort and peace and rest; A breath of

Money can never buy happiness, or peace of mind.
Scarlett Johnson
When asked about the subject of world peace, she (Mother Teresa) said to "promote world peace, go home and love your family". She said that even this small action could have a massive impact on your relationships and the promotion of peace.
Bob M. ZoBell, Spitfire pilot WWII, 1941-1945 war journal
War conditions are abnormal so that under strain one may find that the principles you once adhered to without question no longer seem to matter. It is everyone for himself to adjust and live as best he can. It is important that you live but you don't know why especially when death is often so close. You are a mere youth who has learned to fly the finest fighter ever built, to handle it so well you are more at home in the sky than on the ground. It is important that you learn to shoot well. The special work you were trained for is to destroy the enemy, so you practice, sweat and fly hard. Perhaps in a few months you will be a leader and teach others from the benefits of knowing how. A mere youth may now hold in his hands the destiny of several others. If I emerged to a matured man during my early twenties under such conditions could it have been a normal function? I doubt it every day I fly because my life is too greatly changed and I feel that I am forced to live this way. But still I think of the future and dream of a civilized world where all is peaceful and quiet again...yet I can't see it is possible that I shall live through all this death and destruction...my chances are too slim...Only God alone may preserve us and I put my trust in Him with my prayers...I request no reward for my duties to my country, which I have now put forth above all, except just this; the opportunity to return to that great land and with some assistance establish myself to a living, which in common with other citizens, we can work and watch our country make as great a progress in peacetime as it did in wartime. To this end we must work in unity.

Jeffrey R. Holland: Peace and good tidings; good
tidings and peace. These are among the ultimate
blessings that the gospel of Jesus brings a troubled
world and the troubled people who live in it,
solutions to personal struggles and human
sinfulness, a source of strength for days of
weariness and hours of genuine despair.
E. Stanley Jones Sometimes we have to answer those who wrong us. We owe it to
ourselves and to them to clear up things. But if you do write, then
write that letter upon your knees, as it were. Don't give them a
piece of your mind - you will lose your own peace of mind if you do!
Brittany Ann, Putting God First
When we place God at the center of our lives, we find unexplainable joy, balance and peace.
R. Joseph Owles
You can have a short, turbulent life
seeking glory, Or you can have a long, peaceful life seeking
anonymity.
Tsang Lindsay, Live Free
Truth will always be the path to peace.

The famous Ralph Waldo Emerson was remembered quoting that
there are five enemies to peace:
ambition, avarice, anger, pride and envy.
Just after WWI ended and after Armistice was in place, Walter T. Robus who had
fought in the trenches during the war wrote: The peace celebrations here have been immense,
everybody frantic with joy and excitement; what a relief to the parents of the boys serving! and
what a relief to know the slaughter and suffering are over...
I was once asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.

You talk to your enemies.
Mother Teresa: If we have no peace, it is because we have
forgotten that we belong to each other.
Helen Keller: A people’s peace (is) a peace without victory, a peace without conquests or indemnities.
Richard L. Evans: Well, we ought to live as we ought to live, not only
because it would please God, not only because it would please our
parents, but as a favor for ourselves—for every commandment,
every requirement God has given is for our happiness, for
our health, and for our peace and progress.
John F. Kennedy: Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process,
gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly
building new structures.
Try to keep your soul always in peace and quiet, always ready for whatever our Lord may wish to work in you. It is certainly a higher virtue of the soul, and a greater grace, to be able to enjoy the Lord in different times and different places than in only one.
Saint Ignatius
Peace is such hard work. Harder than war. It takes
way more effort to forgive than to kill.
Rae Carson
Gordon B. Hinckley: Recently while wrestling in my mind with a problem I thought to be of serious consequence I went to my knees in prayer.
There came into my mind a feeling of peace and the words of the

You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.

Where flowers bloom so does hope. Lady Bird Johnson
Benedict was from a wealthy and established family. He grew up shortly after the implosion of the great Roman Empire, and his life was surrounded by the chaos that follows such a monumental cultural shock and re-structuring. In spite of the social instability, the comfortability of Benedict’s family provided him with a relatively normal childhood and experience of life. And so, when the young Benedict went to Rome for his education, he was appalled by the disorder and turmoil in society and the licentiousness and corruption of its leaders. He found himself existentially dissatisfied and completely unhappy.
What did Benedict do?
...in spite of all worldly options, Benedict chose to reject the prevalent darkness, take the good into his own heart, and remove himself from the chaos.
Benedict was looking for pax, that is, he desired peace. He wanted peace in his own soul, peace with creation, peace with his fellow human beings, and peace with God. He did not flee from an “evil world,” but stepped aside from it so that he might be an instrument of goodness. There was no wrath or bitterness, only a gentle soul pursuing righteousness and tranquility.

People who refused to fight and people who supported different forms of pacifism include:
Leo Tolstoy, Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi.
There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest… perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize?
The King chose the second picture. “Because,” explained the King, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.” Author unknown
Jesus — Let’s start with the big and obvious one. Jesus is our
ultimate example of what it means to be a peacemaker. The
whole Bible is centered around this fact. Humans rebelled
against God, and with His blood, Jesus paid the price to
restore peace between a rebellious creation and their loving
creator.
