from Peace in the New Testament by Dr. Daniel C. Arichea

The term "peace" is used in the New Testament in at least five different ways:  (1) peace as the absence of war or chaos, (2) peace as a right relationship with God or with Christ, (3)  peace as a good relationship among people, (4)  peace as an individual virtue or state, that is, tranquility or serenity, and (5) peace as part of a greeting formula.

James 3

17  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Mosiah 27

6 And there began to be much peace again in the land;

from Desiderata:

Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence... be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.  With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Earnest Larsen

Peace at any price means there really

is no peace and the price is too high

Carl von Clausewitz      War and peace are ideas which fundamentally can have no gradations.

Beau Norton, How to Find Peace      Peace is not something that can be 'achieved' but rather something that one must become.

Thich Nhat Hanh:  Creating True Peace                                        Peace is not simply

 the absence of

 violence; it is the

 cultivation of

 understanding,

 insight, and compassion,

 combined with

 action.

Joseph F. Smith, Oct 14 Conference Report.            We shall never have peace until we have truth.  We will never be able to establish peace on earth and good will until we have drunk at the fountain of righteousness and eternal truth, as God has revealed it to man.

Benjamin Franklin        There never was a good war or a bad                                             peace

Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.         Ronald Reagan

“Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are.”  Hafsat Abiola

Wendell Berry     When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the

wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”

Rev. Paul Chappell

“To replace the old paradigm of war with a new paradigm of waging peace, we must be pioneers who can push the boundaries of human understanding. We must be doctors who can cure the virus of violence. We must be soldiers of peace who can do more than preach to the choir. And we must be artists who will make the world our masterpiece.”

“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”

“We’ll have all eternity to celebrate our victories, but only one short hour before sunset in which to win them.”

“Look well to the fire of your souls, for the tendency of fire is to go out.”

Peace is a day-to-day problem, the product of a multitude of events and judgments. Peace is not an ‘is,’ it is a ‘becoming.’”           Haile Selassie

Peace cannot exist without justice, justice cannot exist without fairness, fairness cannot exist without development, development cannot exist without democracy, democracy cannot exist without respect for the identity and worth of cultures and peoples.

Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be

taken one step at a time.” Lyndon B. Johnson

from  GRAINESDEPAIX  at    https://www.grainesdepaix.org/en/resources/basic-concepts/definitions/how-to-define-peace

Peace is a relationship of living well together. It is strong and lasting, based on respect, serenity, cordiality and mutual understanding among people. It comes from the expression of the heart just as much as from the mind’s. It is through human affection that we can transcend violence.

Peace is a lifestyle choice in which human interactions are based on a sense of humanity that is able to counter the violent tendencies of powerful, vindictive and angry people, by tapping into their hearts and minds. A lifestyle choice that is personal, collective, economic and political.

“Peace is liberty in tranquility.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.”
John F. Kennedy

In order to understand the kind of peace Jesus came to bring us, we must first understand what the word “peace” means. When we usually think of the word “peace”, we think of the lack of conflict or hostility or we picture someone being free from internal and external strife.

The Biblical concept of peace is much fuller than that. The Hebrew word for peace, šālôm, or the Greek word, eirēnē, means a sense of totality or completeness, success, fulfillment, wholeness, harmony, security and well being. It is God’s perfect peace–His complete, lacking nothing type of wholeness and harmony. It is what we might experience when we say, “it is well with my soul.”

From Inner Peace to World Peace:  Buddhist Meditation and Practice  https://www.nepjol.info/

The concept of 'peace' is defined and understood in various ways. Understanding peace as absence of violence is a limited vision. Peace encompasses happiness and harmony among living beings. In a wider understanding, peace is the nature and goal of every sentient being. Being peaceful is living in friendship with oneself and with every creature. Peace is indivisible but peril anywhere can be a threat to peace everywhere. Buddhism envisions peace as inner state of mental tranquility which spreads outward. Attaining a state of inner peace could be an inspiration to all. Buddha attained inner peace by the practice of meditation, which inspired him to work for world peace.

  1. Thanks grandma and grandpa! We loved the pictures and quotes. Our favorite pictures were of the sunsets, the frozen rose, the multi colored leaves, and coyotes. Thanks for reminding us of the beautiful Desiderata poem. Love you!!
